A Vote For English
But what public good is advanced by encouraging the participation of people who, by saying they require bilingual assistance, are saying they cannot understand the nation’s political conversation? By receiving such assistance they are receiving a disincentive to become proficient in English.
Declaring English the national language is a mere gesture. But by ending bilingual ballots, American law would perform its expressive function of buttressing, by codifying and vivifying, certain national assumptions and aspirations. Among those is this: The idea of citizenship becomes absurd when sundered from the ability to understand the nation’s civic conversation.

According to the narrative in Genesis Chapter 11 of the Bible, the Tower of Babel was a tower built by a united humanity to reach the heavens. Because man had it in his heart to be like God, God stopped this project by confusing their languages so that each spoke a different language. As a result, they could no longer communicate with one another and the work was halted. The builders were then scattered to different parts of Earth. This story is used to explain the existence of many different languages and races.

WBM: Why oh why do people who obviously cannot speak much more than their native english feel obligated to fear for those who refuse to abide by that particular ignorance? Because God was unsuccessful at Babel at thwarting mankind’s ingenuity, we are quite better off today wouldn’t you say?

McCain and the Base Truth
“Oh, he has to say that to get the Republican nomination,” explain many Democrats with a girlish crush on the charming, funny, intelligent and heroic Republican senator from Arizona, and/or a special loathing of their party’s own star, the junior senator from New York. “That” might refer to McCain’s strong right-to-life stand on abortion, or his strong support for the war in Iraq, or his recent rapprochement with Jerry Falwell. They admire McCain as a straight shooter among sneaks, a truth-teller amid bull artists. They long, understandably, for some fresh air in the fetid atmosphere of politics. And McCain delivers that.

The first PSA, from 1987, showed a man who holds up an egg and says, “This is your brain,” before picking up a frying pan and adding, “This is drugs.” He then cracks open the egg, fries the contents, and says, “This is your brain on drugs.” Finally he looks up at the camera and asks, “Any questions?”

Constantine I: Hmm, maybe I can’t count on youse guys

The overwhelming majority of the Byzantines were conscious of their continuity with the ancient Greeks. Even though the ancient Greeks were not Christians, the Byzantines regarded them as their ancestors.
New York Times ~ David D Kirkpatrick
Conservative Christians Criticize Republicans
Republican officials, who were granted anonymity to speak publicly because of the sensitivity of the situation, acknowledged the difficult political climate but said they planned to rally conservatives by underscoring the contrast with Democrats and emphasizing the recent confirmations of two conservatives to the Supreme Court.
Midterm Congressional elections tend to be won by whichever side can motivate more true believers to vote. Dr. Dobson and other conservatives are renewing their complaints about the Republicans at a time when several recent polls have shown sharp declines in approval among Republicans and conservatives. And compared with other constituencies, evangelical Protestants have historically been suspicious of the worldly business of politics and thus more prone to stay home unless they feel clear moral issues are at stake.

Constantine is generally considered to be the first Christian emperor. Tradition holds that before a battle at the gates of Rome in 312 against a rival emperor, Constantine saw a flaming cross in the sky with the words “By this sign, conquer” [In Hoc Signo Vinces]. Whatever the actual case may be, there is no question that after 312 Constantine began to shower favors on Christianity, and the religion, which had been persecuted under Diocletian, became a “permitted religion” and steadily increased its power as years passed, apart from a short-lived return to pagan predominance under the emperor Julian. Although the empire was not yet “Byzantine” under Constantine, Christianity would become one of the defining characteristics of the Byzantine Empire, as opposed to the pagan Roman Empire.

“There’s going to be more tough fighting ahead in Iraq and there’ll be more days of sacrifice and struggle,” Bush said. “Yet, the enemies of freedom have suffered a real blow today, and we’ve taken a great stride on the march to victory.
“This historic achievement by determined Iraqis will make America more secure,” he said.
… Few believe the task will be easy. It remains uncertain whether Iraqi leaders representing religiously and ethnically based parties can set aside their interests and rise to the challenge of managing a nation perched at the brink of disaster.
“I don’t want to mislead you by leading you to believe that the improvement will happen instantaneously,” Khalilzad told reporters. “I think that with the formation of a national unity government with a good program and with competent ministers, Iraq will be on the right trajectory.”

A clue to the answer might have been seen in the eyes of Vietnamese villagers. A journalist who had covered the war in Europe recalled the smiles and hugs and joyous offers of wine when GIs came through liberated areas of Italy. In Vietnam, the rural people, when American units passed them on the streets or in the villages, kept their eyes down or looked the other way and offered no greetings. “They just wanted us to go home.” Here was a sign of the vanity of “nation-building.” What nation has ever been built from outside?

Getting back in the saddle again.

A place full of different people.

The Latest White House Whopper
Let me point out again, I don’t have a dog in this fight. There are just some things I know from living in Texas all my life. One is, don’t bother to build a fence. Two is, if you want to stop illegal immigrants, stop the people who hire them — quit punishing people who come because there are jobs. Three, this border has always been porous, and it has always worked to the advantage of the United States.
If you want to do the smart thing and look for a long-term solution, try fixing NAFTA and helping with economic development in Mexico. Meanwhile, I could do without the drivel about how these people are so different. Of course they’re not. Try getting out a little more.

WBM: Sorry to be gone for so long, we had a death in the family. My uncle Michael Lujano passed away at the young age of 47, leaving behind his four children and wife. He had an aneurism late last year followed by two heart attacks, the last one being terminal.
RIP uncle mike, you were great and will always be missed :)

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Bush, Reid Trade Barbs on Immigration
President Bush accused Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid on Thursday of “single-handedly thwarting” action on immigration legislation, and got a brisk retort in return.
President Bush has as much credibility on immigration as he does on Iraq and national security,” shot back the Nevada Democrat.
Bush and Reid swapped charges as Republicans disclosed a Spanish-language radio advertising campaign designed to shoulder Democrats with the responsibility for legislation passed by the GOP-controlled House that would make illegal immigrants subject to felony charges.
Reid responded within minutes.

Slide of early sighting of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in remote Montana wilderness.
Washington Post ~ By Thomas E. Ricks
Military Plays Up Role of Zarqawi
That slide, created by Casey’s subordinates, does not specifically state that U.S. citizens were being targeted by the effort, but other sections of the briefings indicate that there were direct military efforts to use the U.S. media to affect views of the war. One slide in the same briefing, for example, noted that a “selective leak” about Zarqawi was made to Dexter Filkins, a New York Times reporter based in Baghdad. Filkins’s resulting article, about a letter supposedly written by Zarqawi and boasting of suicide attacks in Iraq, ran on the Times front page on Feb. 9, 2004.
Leaks to reporters from U.S. officials in Iraq are common, but official evidence of a propaganda operation using an American reporter is rare.

“Since we stopped worrying that the trolls would come and get us, their existence have become so pointless that they have all emigrated. Some of them got lost and ended up in the Rocky Mountains, and one of them was temporarily seen by professor Pronin in Soviet Pamir. But the mayority of these poor trolls into exile have established themselves in Himalaya, where they only risk being seen by people with a desire to have something to tell.”

Less charitable scientists have argued that many (or most) sightings are simply hoaxes.

How to obtain a unity government in Iraq… bomb Iran.

“Peace is our Profession”

Wisconsin State Journal ~ By Bill Wineke
Could Iran become classic case of crying wolf?
Vice President Dick Cheney says the United States is “keeping all options on the table. We will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”
So the question is, would you support military action against Iran should all diplomatic options fail? Would you support the kind of bombing campaign President Clinton used against the Serbs?
Iranian order of battle (estimate circa 1998)
4 Armored Divisions
2 Mechanized Divisions
5 Infantry Divisions
5 Commando/Special Forces (1 Airmobile Division) Brigades & Division
5 Artillery Divisions
Several Brigades of Antiaircraft, Engineers, Logistics and SSMs (Scuds).
A modern airforce
A much more plausible CW capability
Total on Ground: 350,000 regulars, 220,000 conscripts
Iran can also call on substantial numbers of reservists as most males must carry out a full two year military service at some point in their lives. It is generally acknowledged that the conscript element of the army is not trained nearly as well as the professional active duty army.
US & Iraqi order of battle (circa 2006)
1 overstretched Army Group
1 overstretched Marine Expeditionary Force
1 Iraqi battalion that can operate on it’s own
USN and USAF elements
Total on Ground: 130,000 - 140,000 regulars and IRR folks who wonder when they can finally come home.

Curtis LeMay: Nothing. Because the only alternative open to them is one they can’t choose.
President Kennedy: You know they are not just missiles we’re gonna be destroying, General. If we kill Soviet soldiers they’re going to respond. I mean how would we respond?.. if they kill ours… no they are gonna do something, General. I can promise you that.

God has given us the Papacy - let us enjoy it”
Washington Post ~ By Jonathan Weisman
Immigrant Bill Fallout May Hurt House GOP
Republicans say they could accept that sentiment if they believed they had won political points from the GOP’s restive base. But for all the negatives, they don’t have many positives to show for their efforts.
“From the standpoint of those who would applaud the House’s stand, I’d say we have not gotten sufficient credit,” said Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.), a reliable supporter of House leaders. “I’m somewhat distressed that they have not gotten word of what we’ve done.”
The politics of the issue have shifted markedly since the House acted. Republican lawmakers are increasingly saying they will now consider some avenue to grant illegal immigrants access to lawful employment. And Democrats who voted for the House bill with an eye on their political futures or to preempt feared attacks from conservatives are rethinking their position.

No understanding of the protest, no recognition of their own unpopularity or vulnerability, disturbed the six minds (the renaissance papacy). Their view of the interests of the institution they were appointed to govern was so short-sighted as to amount almost to perversity. They possessed no sense of spiritual mission, provided no meaningful religious guidance, performed no moral service for the Christian world.
Their three outstanding attitudes - obliviousness to the growing disaffection of constituents, primacy of self-aggrandizement, illusion of invulnverable status - are persistent aspects of folly. While in the case of the Renaissance popes, these were bred in and exaggerated by the surrounding culture, all are independent of time and recurrent in governorship.
